Light crests/dark troughs and dark crests/light troughs
I found a new drawing support called pastel paper in 1990 and that led to a series of drawings using a thick application of soft pastel. The pronounced, indestructible tooth of the paper allows many layers of colors and also makes revision easy – any mistakes can be lifted out with a stiff-bristled brush. Some objects, like cumulus clouds, are best made with the lights blending smoothly over the darks, while other things like foliage work with darks broken over lights. I mostly work on the small pastels when I am in Maine in the summer.
